What happens when you call 988

988 routes your call by area code to a local crisis center where a trained counselor will listen, support, and help connect you to local resources. In a small percentage of calls (less than 2%), the counselor may involve emergency services if there's an immediate safety concern. Confidentiality varies by call center and circumstance — counselors are mandated reporters in some situations.

Veterans can press 1 after dialing 988 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line directly.
