ADHD: more than attention

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition involving differences in executive function — the brain's management system for attention, impulse control, working memory, and emotional regulation. ADHD affects 9% of children and persists into adulthood in approximately 60% of cases.

ADHD is not a motivation problem or a character flaw. It's a neurobiological difference that responds well to accurate diagnosis and appropriate support — including behavioral therapy, skills coaching, medication, and environmental accommodations.

Autism spectrum disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in social communication and interaction, and by restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior or interests. Autism is a spectrum — presentations vary enormously from person to person.

Autistic individuals have the same range of strengths, interests, and goals as anyone else. The goal of autism-supportive services is to provide tools and supports that help autistic individuals thrive on their own terms — not to "normalize" autistic traits for others' comfort.

Getting an accurate evaluation

Both ADHD and autism require comprehensive evaluation by a qualified professional — typically a neuropsychologist, developmental pediatrician, or child psychiatrist. Evaluation involves clinical interviews, standardized rating scales, observation, and cognitive testing. An accurate diagnosis is the foundation for appropriate support.

Treatment and support

For ADHD: behavioral therapy (especially for children under 6), medication (stimulants have the strongest evidence base for ADHD), parent training, school accommodations (IEP or 504 plan), and executive function coaching. For autism: Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, social skills groups, and supportive psychotherapy for co-occurring conditions like anxiety and depression.
