What child therapy looks like for younger children

Children aged 5–12 are still developing the language and abstract thinking needed for traditional talk therapy. Skilled child therapists use play, art, storytelling, games, and movement to help children express, process, and make sense of their inner world and experiences.

Common reasons children ages 5–12 seek therapy

  • Anxiety — separation anxiety, fears and phobias, worry, school anxiety
  • ADHD — impulsivity, attention difficulties, social skills
  • Trauma — abuse, neglect, witnessing violence, medical trauma, parental separation
  • Behavioral challenges — aggression, defiance, emotional dysregulation
  • Family transitions — divorce, new siblings, moves, bereavement
  • Social difficulties — peer rejection, bullying, friendship challenges

Effective therapy approaches for young children

Play Therapy creates a safe space for children to express and work through their experiences using toys and play as their natural language. Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT) is evidence-based for children who have experienced trauma. Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) improves the parent-child relationship while reducing behavioral problems. Child-Focused CBT teaches coping skills in child-friendly ways.

What parents should expect

A good child therapist will regularly update you on your child's progress and teach you skills to use at home. Sessions typically last 45–50 minutes. The first session is often a parent consultation without the child. Expect 10–20 sessions for most childhood concerns, though complex trauma may require more.

How to help your child feel comfortable

Explain therapy in simple, positive terms — "You'll play and talk with a special helper who helps kids with their feelings." Avoid framing therapy as punishment or as a response to being "bad." Let your child know they are not in trouble. Most children warm up to their therapist within 2–3 sessions.
